Milk - Interview 31/07/99

Milk, who are they I hear you say, well they’re a new US unsigned band. I don’t know too much about them, in fact I haven’t even heard them! But from a page of un-signed bands somewhere on the net I found a little bit about them they sounded good so I decided to interview them. If you want to find out more then please e-mail Dave Maggiore, they lead singer and songwriter.

Furry Tree: What other band names did you consider?
Dave: We’re contemplating changing the name of the band to SHEETS OF HISS! I thought of Bleach but, it was too Nirvanaish. Ifuknhate3rdIblind but, I didn’t want to mention them everytime I talked aboutMILK.

FT: Who are the most famous band you’ve ever played with?
D: Most famous band I’ve played with? Well...I was almost in a band with former Extreme guitar player Nuno Bettencourt. Does that count? Matter?

FT: Who are your favourite bands?
D: Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, Local H, Nirvana, Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Prince, Halo Benders, Verbena and or the Pixies.

FT: Have these bands influenced you in any way?
D: These bands have all influenced us (Sometimes, I say me because I write all our songs). Every song the Beatles have done are classics. No one writes songs that matter a year later, like The Stones, Beatles or The Who have done. I’d Like to combine the melodies of the Beatles and Built to Spill with the raw energy of Modest Mouse, Nirvana, The Who then add parts Verbena sleaze, one part Frank Black rage and top it off with 8/16ths of Prince, Kevin Smith and Sigmund Freud.

FT: What was your first gig like?
D: Hey, I think I’ll have another Coor’s lite to take some of that nervous edge off...One hour, twelve beers later...anyone know which band I’m in? Actually, The second show was better I broke two guitars, couldn’t keep the third in tune, Scott the MONSTER DRUMMER destroyed his snare. We had a one hour sound check, yea one plethora of a sound check. I have this show on video and I can’t get through it.

FT: What are your other jobs?
D: Scott the Drummer is a Viking, Tony the Bass player is an actor. He played The Lion in the Lion King, I’m a Pet Physiologist who is THIS Close to finding a cure for K9 Tourrets.

FT: What is the band doing this year?
D: We are relatively a new band so, our plan of attack is to play as many shows as possible, while independently releasing our first disk and recording our second. I have this idea, most huge bands sell say, five million records at $10 - $15ea...,right? What if we sell one or two records for Two or Three million each? Less costs to us for getting disks run off, and just as much profit!

FT: Biggest moment?
D: We have a song called Alysaa Milano. She put it on her offical site for eight days!

FT: What un-signed bands do you like?
D: The bass player Tony, plays in a band called DOWNCHILD. They have labels checking them out as we speak. I like them. Fig Dish lost their contract with Polygram (un-signed?) I like them. Dandelion lost their label and broke up or are unsigned. But, on the bright side bands like match box 20 prosper(?)

FT: How long will the last?
D: The band will last until Thursday, October 32 at Noon. That’s it! Accept it.

FT: What question be you like to be asked and what would the answer be?
D: Why does the general public accept mostly trash and dismiss art? Name a Pablo Piccasso piece? Now name a Will Smith Song?

That is it, a bit short I know but I didn’t know too much about them.
