This is my interview with the spacey, punk, ska band Smash Mouth’s bassist, Paul, probably the most famous band I’ve interviewed so far, I mean even trends have heard of them!
Furry Tree: How are you and the band? Paul: We’re great. The tour is going well and we’re all ready to go for at least another year or so.
FT: Whats the bands history? P: Steve was a rap singer with a band called FOS --- Greg and I were in a band called Lackadaddy. We both were managed by the same person. When those projects fell through, our manager hooked us up together and we formed Smash Mouth. The rest is history.
FT: What other band names did you consider? P: We didn’t.
FT: How old were you when you learned bass guitar? P: Seven.
FT: What was your first gig like? P: It was a talent show. I was very nervous.
FT: Are you pleased with how your new albums going? P: 100%
FT: Are you going to play in London later this year?(near where I live) P: We’ll be on tour in Europe from Nov 18 to Dec 3. We will be in London for two or three days.
FT: After your single and the Gap advert do you get free stuff from Converse and Gap? P: We did before the single and the Gap advert. And, we still do.
FT: What is the most memorable moment in the band? P: We have too many memorable moments to choose only one. But touring with U2 was a highlight.
FT: How long were you an un-signed band? P: About a year.
FT: Do you ever regret being in a band? P: No
FT: What was yours and the bands last jobs? P: Greg and I played in different cover bands in bars for the past 15 years --- Steve and Kevin painted houses.
FT: Who are your favourite bands? P: I have so many it’s hard to say. Right now I like Kid Rock.
FT: Have they influenced you in anyway? P: No, not really. Actually, not at all.
FT: How were you discovered? P: A radio station in Los Angeles got ahold of the first single Walkin’ On The Sun and started playing it.
FT: Have you ever had any weird fan mail? P: Every day.
FT: What question would you like to be asked and what would the answer be? P: Do you have a college degree? Why yes I do and I’m the smartest person in the band.
That’s it, short and sweet!
